NDA junior, Julia Gerwe, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. In recognition of her dedication to the service of others, Julia received a letter from President Barack Obama congratulating her on the award and thanking Julia for her service to the community.
The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program on behalf of President Barack Obama.
Julia earned this award for the substantial amount of service she has completed over the course of her high school career. She has primarily worked with the American Red Cross. Last summer she worked with a group called the “Red Cross Players” that prepared and put on shows about emergency preparedness for kids. For the past three years, she been involved with another youth division in the Red Cross, their Leadership Development Center. She also volunteers with the Diocese of Covington through their Youth Commissioned Evangelization Team (YCET), which facilitates retreats for 8th graders preparing for Confirmation. Finally, Julia finds time to work with Notre Dame Academy, St. Pius X Elementary School, St. Pius X Youth Group and Providence Pavilion.
Julia is also very involved at NDA. She is Secretary of NDA’s Thespian Society and has been a participant in nearly every NDA/CCH production since her entrance into NDA. She is also a co-president of World Affairs Club this year, a member of Academic Team, the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and the Spanish Club. Julia says that she loves all of the activities she is involved in and is very appreciative of her NDA education.
