This summer everyone in the Notre Dame Academy community had a summer reading assignment: I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai and today NDA students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to embrace Malala as our sister in mission – one who lives the value of educating women to make a difference.
Today the entire NDA community will participate in a full day of discussion and activities relating to the story of Malala Yousafzai and celebrating the NDA Common Reader Initiative. The day will begin with a student assessment followed by small group discussions, large group discussions, viewing Malala’s UN address and various learning sessions. A group of 35 faculty, staff and students worked to plan this special day and some very interesting learning sessions. Some of the topics presented in the learning sessions include Basics of Muslim Spirituality and Prayer, Understanding Islamic Customs Regarding Women, Pakistani Food Preparation and Exploring Pakistani Music and Film.
“This common reader initiative fully supports NDA’s educational mission and vision as a school sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame, especially in exploring the story of a young women’s commitment to getting an education,” said NDA President Dr. Laura Koehl. “This shared experience will encourage global awareness and critical thinking at NDA. It provides a real life example of a young women making a difference in our world.”
