An article written by NDA Science teacher Mrs. Molly Proudfit was recently published in the October edition of The American Biology Teacher, the journal for the National Association of Biology Teachers. The article is titled “Sorting Fact From Fiction: Media Literacy in the Biology Classroom” and was published under the Inquiry and Investigations category in the journal. In the first phase of the lesson, students are presented with a conspiracy theory (flat Earth theory, etc.) and construct media literacy questions to evaluate the claims. In the second phase of the lesson, students apply the questions they have constructed to a pseudoscience claim (climate change is not caused by human actions, fad diets, COVID myths, etc.).
