This week in Black History Month we celebrate amazing black performers! To catch us up, we will mention two today: Regina King and Beyonce. Regina King is a top-tier actress who has a new film coming out soon - Shirley. In this film, Regina Kings plays Shirley Chisholm, who in 1972, was the first black candidate for the Presidency. Happy Monday and Happy HOPE Week! The Black American author and poet we celebrate today is Amanda Gorman. She was born in 1998, so she is now 25 years old. While she was an award-winning writer at Harvard, Gorman became the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. Gorman rose to fame in 2021 for writing and delivering her poem "The Hill We Climb" at President Joe Biden’s inauguration; you can listen to this poem by clicking the QR code on the display case. Today we celebrate Toni Morrison, the First African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. She was an award-winning novelist, essayist, book editor, and college professor. Toni Morrison's work inspired a generation of writers to follow in her footsteps. Happy Birthday Mr. Schlosser !! The Black American artist we highlight today is Maya Angelou. She never went to college but she spoke 6 languages and received over 50 honorary degrees. She was an award-winning author and a civil rights activist. She was the first black woman to recite a poem at the inauguration of a United States President, in 1993. Throughout February, Notre Dame Academy will celebrate Black History Month. An informative timeline illustrating Black History in America will be running continuously in the CLC. Each week we will highlight Black American Artists who used their artistic gifts to uplift the race and inspire a nation. Important facts and accomplishments of inspirational Black Americans are posted on the Display Case in the front of the building. Softball tryouts will take place beginning Feb. 12th, 14th and 15th from 7 - 9pm. in the NDA Gym. _____________________ Congratulations to the Archery Pandas for a good performance at the Highlands High School Tournament Saturday. The Pandas shot 3018 which included a season high 125 tens. The team was led by Ava Boertlein at 279 which included 2 perfect 50's, Savannah Bien at 263, Lea Youtsey at 263, Lucy Siegert at 262 and Sarah Becham at 252. Happy Birthday Ms. Barnes and Mr. Lonnemann! Life Club will be meeting after school on Monday, February 5th in room 254.  We will be watching a portion of the documentary "Hush," a film that uncovers some of the hidden information regarding long term impacts of abortion and contraception on women's health.     We will also be sharing some information about upcoming Life Club events like the Blood Drive and Diaper Drive.
